It's horrible news, especially here since both aircraft were from Houston. I've been inside "Texas Raiders" and have pics. One of the paramedics I work with works on the B-17 and was there but not on board.

Sounds like it may have been the Air Boss call. The P63 had no idea where the 17 was

Yup. I originally blamed the pilot of the P-36 but after reading the report, I blame the Air boss. Considering the KingCobra is a fast fighter plane, the pilot couldn’t see him until it was far too late to avoid the crash.

Tom, I disagree. When flying in an area where it is known or can be expected that other aircraft are operating, a pilot should never fly in a constant attitude, particularly not a constant bank attitude. Pretty much the same concept as a fighter pilot never flying straight and level too long or not scanning all the sky around himself. A proven method of more likely being the Shooter than the Shootee. Too much time was spent with the main show line blocked out of the P-63 pilot's view by that right wing, for way too long a time. It was apparent to me just as the video started that a collision was imminent and it was dreadful to see it all play out. Not a video I want to see twice. There is also fault to be found with the B-17 crew, as with 5 on board there should have been no area hidden from that crew's scan.

I was also very surprised to see how badly the B-17 came apart, given that there was not a great deal of speed differential between the two aircraft. Perhaps the P-63 prop contacted the fuselage right behind the wing

Lemoine uses the term "belly check" and if you listen to his tone you can tell that he feels the same hair rising on the back of his neck feeling that I did seeing the long duration stable left turn in a dense traffic situation. It's all very sad, and probably the result of a moment's inattention. I always enjoyed formation flying and have done it in everything from Cubs to business jets, most often with dissimilar aircraft types which makes the flying harder as gust response and acceleration/decceleration are different between the two types of aircraft involved.

In an attempt to make this dreadful thread a bit more cheerful, here is yours truly in a Citation 501 flying about 50 feet off the wing of a first generation Piper Seneca over Lake Tahoe, done for an advertising photo shoot.
