Not fun at all Stuart. Having purchased a new home just a few years ago, and then watching my middle daughter purchase a home a few months ago, I can truly empathize with your position. You may be out some money, but at least you dodged a major bullet with that house.

Well, you English do everything assbackwards when it comes to buying real estate. 
It is kinda unfair how you get screwed over after the fact the previous owner probably knew there were issues with the property.
Here in the states, property like that don't usually gets sold unless you’re a house flipper. They in turn resell at a higher fair market profit once the reno is done. I’ve seen quite a few houses being flipped and resell them.

Man that's horrible Stuart. I feel your pain. We looked at buying a house last year and couldn't find anything that we could afford. Ended up renting (again) a house at almost the last minute. Rentals were hard to find as well.
