Warbird TBM ditching

Post by Stikpusher »

I don’t know if anybody here caught this over the weekend, but a TBF performing at an air show over Cocoa Beach FL had mechanical problems and had to ditch. Some good footage and photos here.

Doesn’t look too bad for wear afterwards, but I’m sure it’s gonna take a thorough cleaning to be airworthy again.

I saw that. Cocoa is only about 2 hrs from me. Pilot did a great job of bringing it down gently. Just hope the salt water didn't do too much damage

They craned it out yesterday, I think. I believe it was said it had25 hours in the water. The pilot did a masterful job.

Well, it’s better than resorting to a crash and burn landing. The pilot did a masterful job doing a soft and wet landing close to shore.

My gramps did a beach landing in a TBF(well...was along for the ride...as the radio op)...somewhere along the coast, back in '43. (willing to bet it was in Florida though (based in Jacksonville).

Had an engine failure. There were 4 on board. Pilot told everybody they could bail out if they wanted, he was gonna try to make the beach.
The other 2 were out the little door before the pilot finished telling them they could bail. Gramps threw out the raft behind them and stayed on board for the ride.

Any landing that you can walk away from is a good one... applies to pilots and paratroopers... :giggles:

True story!
All made it out just fine.

His other story....
He was walking out to the plane...not feeling well, but was going anyway. The CO stopped him...he didn't look well. He "argued" a bit, but the CO won of course...grounded him and ordered him to go see the doc. He watched his plane take off, gear retracted and at about 150'...the plane rolled over and went in, exploding on impact.
I don't wish illness on anyone...but man, am I glad he was sick!
