A visit to Davis Monathan AFB

Post by Stikpusher »

Yesterday we had a nice little road trip. My son had been tasked with a delivery from his base out to Davis Monathan AFB in Tucson, so my wife and I drove out to meet him for a few hours at the completion of his assignment. While we we driving on post I saw that they had a nice display area of preserved aircraft associated with the base, or the 355th Fighter Wing based there, so I took some photos.

Nice pictures. Thanks! Son is looking good, too.

A few years ago, I was invited by my sister who had a friend whose husband was stationed at Pax River NAS (Patuxent River NAS) We got the chance to get aboard a Sea King. Saw some P-3 Orions too. Come to think of it, I need to get another P-3 Orion kit. I've done one years ago and loved it.

I’m happy to hear that you like the photos guys. Thank you.

Lyle, he has turned out to be a good young man. I’m quite proud of him.

Tom, you definitely need to get yourself that P-3 kit, probably a H-3 too! I wish that somebody did the HH-3 in 1/48. I had been on our Department SAR SH-3 many years ago when we first acquired them. Quite a big beast inside and out. Gotta love Sikorskys.

Very cool pics Stik!

I have a P-3 Orion kit. I got it at a model show and whoever had it before sanded half of fuselage clean of all the panel lines. And there's no way to tell where the sanded off panel lines were. :headslap:

Carlos, I know! LOL! I've been wanting to.get another Hasegawa P-3 Orion kit for some time now. I remember that kit went together flawlessly. I did forget to mention I did ask what we're the chances of us.... you know... going up for a quick joyride on the Sea King. :giggles:
You know the answer to that. :giggles: :giggles: :giggles:
But hey, it didn't hurt to ask. I did notice an oily feeling on the cargo area where we went in though. It was a big treat for all of us to actually step foot inside a military helicopter. My son was around 5, 6, or 7 at the time.

My uncle worked at Pax River NAS for years up until.his retirement 10 years ago.

A lot of nice looking aircraft they have there
March as one, Don't look back

Let your weapons slash and tear This is no place for fear
Hold the lines! Move as one! In unity our victory's won
Our shields will form a mighty wall
United we shall never fall

Well, you can always turn up some reference drawings online for guidance and add your own panel lines.

Hey, it never hurts to ask. As far as the oily feel in the cargo area, that seems to be common on larger choppers. Usually it’s hydraulic fluid leakage. When they stop leaking you worry because your out of fluid. I’ll bet that your uncle saw plenty of cool stuff working there at Pax River.

Thanks Clint. I need to hit the air park here at Luke sometime and get photos of whatever they happen to have. Each base has their own unique mix in their collection, usually based on types that have flown from there and/or with the history of the wing currently assigned to the base.
