Stu's Albanian Air Force

Post by Stuart »

Evening Gents,

I've been thinking a lot recently about where I'm going with my modelling. Since I decided last year to move away from simple kits to larger scale builds I've completed... well sod all, which has been getting me down somewhat. Although I love the detail that larger kits can offer, the fact that the only kit I've started AND finished (AND enjoyed) since last December happens to be a Matchbox 1/72 Me410 struck me as rather ironic.

So I've decided to return to my roots as it were and go back to what I used to enjoy the most - simple 1/72 aircraft kits. I may not go back to really old basic 60's kits - but I'm going to try and keep it uncomplicated.

Thinking about projects, years ago I picked up (and later sold) a really interesting decal set from Blue Rider - the Albanian Air Force from the 1950's to the 1970s. It was a great little set and basically told the story of the early Migs up to the -21, along with a super cool Ilyushin Il-28. I did build the Mig-15 but alas lost it last year.

So I've purchased another copy of the sheet with the intention of building all the aircraft listed on it.

Mig-15
Mig-15UTI
Mig-17
Mig-19
Mi-21
IL-28

I'm not going to build then as the sad examples that you now see rotting in storage (google them), but rather at a time when they were in use and reasonably well cared for.

First up is the Mig-15. Here's the kit I'll be using - don't be fooled by the crap artwork, it's actually a really nice modern tooled kit, maybe not as refined as the Eduard kit but is does build up into a nice looking model.

Nicely packaged inside.

It's a simple yet rather fun little build that goes together nicely.

So far I've started doing some basic painting...

Cheers dudes and thanks for taking the time to do some reading!

I completely understand what you mean by complicated builds Stuart. Some times my ambition outweighs my abilities it seems and either a build stagnates and gets built much later(as was the case for my Arado 234 build ) or doesn’t get built at all. Looking forward to seeing more out of this build buddy.

Very interesting list of subjects there!

Good timing regarding the Mig-17 in your list, Airfix will come with a brand new tool;

Not sure when it will be released though.. but soon I guess..

That's pretty much what kicked the idea off - I read the review in AMW. I think it's due out in December so I might have to put it on pre-order.

Now this looks like a great little MiG. But what made you decide upon the Albanian Air Force? :hmm: Was it the decal set for a common thread theme?
"Surely I have made my meaning plain? I intend to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I have deprived your ship of power, and when I swing 'round, I intend to deprive you of your life."

:hmm: That's a good question...

I think it was a GB I was part of a few years back - for small Air forces. I was hunting around for something of interest when I can across this set, and I happened to have a few Migs in the stash so... :lashed:

Now that makes sense. Those Migs have seen so much service across the globe in so many schemes that it could be really hard to pick a scheme....
