Tamiya 1/48 P-38G Lightning

Post by Floki »

I've started on my next build the Tamiya 1/48 P-38G Lightning
Going to be in the markings of:
P-38G-13 s/n 43-2204
Piloted by:
Lt. John G. O'neill
of the
9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force
out of
Dobodura, New Guinea, November of 1943

First thing I want to say about this kit is that it's the best engineered kit I've ever have worked on. If you are thinking about getting it then do it, if you wasn't thinking about getting it, well go get it anyway so far everything just falls together so well and you can tell that every pieces has been toughly thought out in how it fits together.

Going to be using some extras on this kit
1st is the Eduard spACE 3d decals they are similar to the Quinta studios offerings. They offer a ton of detail but in my opinion comparing them to the few sets of Quinta Studios 3d decals I have in the stash, they are of lower quality and the IP has that slight quilted look to it but no where near as bad as their colored PE offerings.

2nd is marking decals by Eduard, this set offers 5 marking options see above for the option I will be using

3rd is Master brass barrels

4th is HGW seat belts

The 3d decals add a lot of extra detail to the cockpit but like I said I will probably stick with Quinta Studios if I can. For chipping I used Tamiya Chrome Silver, the reason is I wasn't sure how the decals would hold up to the hairspray chipping but in the future I will just go the hairspray method since it looks way better IMO.

I did use hairspray to chip the pilot seat

I also built up the landing gear bays the doors are well thought out as they are two pieces that sandwich together so you have no visible ejector marks on any surface.

I'm looking forward to painting this so much! It's been so much fun to build so far and I hope you all will enjoy this build

Thanks for looking in!

Tamiya is just killing it with every new kit. Those wheel bays look sublime!

It's been very enjoyable so far. Kind of wish the build wasn't going so fast.

When they released this kit, I really wanted one. Still pricey for my wallet. Hopefully, I’ll find one reasonable priced at the upcoming Syrcon 2022 this October. Who knows... maybe I’ll get lucky if I won it at their raffle drawings.

Oh yeah, I wanted the Tamiya F-14 Tomcat kit too.

I paid $50 for this at the last IPMS show I went to earlier this year. I haven't priced the F-14
