Paul trys another car >NO PICS<

Post by Paul »

Joe (Mustang1989) and I were sort of working on this, I did the build and he gave me some much needed pointers which will be applied on my forth coming car build. Thanks, Joe, I am truly looking forward to more car tips.

This is the kit I chose.

I think I have done a similar kit back in the 80's but don't hold me to it. I have decided to search out a color that suits me but most of them have already been done so I am While my last car adventure turned out a fiasco this one turned out , meh, OK. Joe gave me some pointers and some places to search out techniques that came out to be quite going with something from the airplane genre. Aotake blue/green. I figure that hardly anybody in the car world would know about that so I am giving it a shot. Ill use a teal with a chrome base coat which should kick out a nice metallic sheen.

So far I have the block and heads painted.

I didn't have real Chrysler red so I shot some guards red and a top coat of scarlet which to me came out pretty dang close. The tranny was done in a custom mix of titanium and RLM 66.

I am keeping the interior black with the door cards black with some chrome trim.

I am not going to get too adventurous and until it comes out right this will be between you and I.
I took the chrome off of some parts that I dont think look good with the Revell toy chrome like stuff. Stock wheels, rocker covers, intake and carb stack. Then I primed them with the poly surface primer from Vallejo and put some aluminum over that. I shot the exhaust manifolds with Vallejo smoke and used my Tamiya weathering system to darken that. I also use it on the aluminum parts to brig out a better luster.

By looking at these I think the exhaust needs a bit more rust or darkening and I should be about ready for a sludge wash. I have some oils that I used to use and I think they will be good for an application such as this.

OK, that thing with the Tamiya smoke looks great so Ill get some payday and give it a shot on the next car. I had to crank up some Trower and Vaughan to get busy today. I have the interior almost done, about as far as I want to go with it and it looks passable to me.

If you remember I said I was going to strip the chrome off of some parts and these rally wheels were some of them. I shot some gloss black enamel and then polished aluminum and to me they look more utilitarian than the all out chrome but that is personal preference I guess.

I pounded my head on what I wanted to do with the color, Flat black seems like a cop out to me and then I tried some red but that turned out to be a railroad shade then I remembered I had some teal so I shot a base coat of chrome and laid up the color over that. With the flat black hood I think it looks pretty wicked. I made up a clear coat of Future and some teal to tinge it a bit and covered it with that. As for a superior shine on acrylics I just haven't found out how to do that yet.

While assembling the front end and bumper I happened to get a real nasty fingerprint on the front clip I cleaned it up best as I could but it still shows. I did manage to get the fantail done with that one long piece of clear . It is kind of hard to figure out how to attach the bumper and make every thing fit well but I managed a half way one with some small gaps. The only parts I haven't put on are the front bumper, side mirrors and head lights. I remember what you said about the lights and I will be going that route as soon and I get things situated. I have to figure how the front bumper fits and get it tacked on.
Thank you for your advice, Joe, none of it is going to waste. I have the 55 to look forward to now..

That's a great effort Paul and it looks good! No problem with the tips and all that stuff. I found that after a couple of attempts that I wanted to learn how to achieve the "perfect" gloss finish. It doesn't exist but it didn't (and still doesn't) stop me from trying again and again. Other techniques come into play and really set apart prior builds from the next one's in line just like any other genre of modeling. I very much look forward to your future builds whether they be aircraft or more cars.

I love the color you chose. It really stands out. Me, myself, I wouldn't have bothered with weathering the exhaust. Most restored muscle cars use aftermarket exhaust new anyways. Overall, it's a great build. Well done!

Paul, that is a magnificent color on that car! It really looks great with the black hood. I commend you on such a smooth application too! Way to go!
