Got crackin on the salmon for my Dad...

Built a stand to hold it while painting.
Got some rattlecan base colors sprayed...

My folks don't really have a lot of wall space, but the have a few cabinet/hutch type things, that have a fair amount of empty space on top.

So, I built a stand to hold the fish for display...

Spent the last couple hours getting some of the color into the head (MM Metallizers)

After tediously trying to pick out individual scales (started on the back side)...it looked pretty stupid. Scale detail on this thing is not very good, which is what led to things being less than satisfactory.
Gotta be a better way!
I had a rattlecan of Model Masters "buffable metalizer".
I sprayed it onto an old sock(soft cloth), let the carrier evaporate, then rubbed it across the fish. The higher details picked up the color. Same principal as "dry brushing".
The effect doesn't show well in pics...like everything, looks better in person.

Penelope (pee-neh-lope) had to check it out!

No threat!

Interesting method for using the Metalizer to highlight the raised details :hmm:

I’d keep an eye on the Penelope critter though...

She was all over the place, trying to check it out. She seemed ready to jump on it, for a closer look. She's got claws like a cat!

She can be easily distracted though!

Got the other fins finished up, along with the rest of the colors. Just some tiny detail work left, then the gloss.

Not quite taxidermy, but pretty darn close! Very nice! :shoutout:

I get to skip all the dirty work. Painting is the same though!

Got the final gloss on the crappie and mounted on it's piece of driftwood...

Salmon is finished up as well. Just gotta wait on the stand to dry.

Oh man, they both look good enough to eat. They look too real.

That crappie looks spot on. I caught a few and boy are they delicious! I never caught salmon before but it sure looks really real.
