AMT Chevy Custom Van Foxy Box

Post by BlackSheep214 »

Another repop of a kit I did as a kid. The kit:

I'm going to do something out of the ordinary with painting the body. A method called Hydrodipping. It creates a funky swirl of paints on the car body. Kinda similar what they did with the KISS van model on the box cover.

It's basically you dip a model kit in very hot water (at least 90 degrees) with two or more colors from a spray can in the water. Then you slowly dip your car/truck body nose first upside down as you submerge it completely before quickly remove it out of the water. The paint in the water just breaks apart after taking it out. I will do a few experimental tests with junk car body parts.

Youtube has a few video how-tos online.

Saw that done before on some show but they were doing gun stocks.

Built up the engine as simple as can be. Not gonna see it since the hood is molded closed.

A coat of semi-gloss paint on van body to prep for hydrodipping. I'm thinking of mixing 2 colors: Testors Metallic Brown and Gold (or Yellow) to create a funky swirl.

I’ve seen videos of that done on a lot of things, even a lady in her wedding dress, but not model chairs. This could be fun!

Sounds simple to do. We'll see... :bored: :giggles: :giggles: :giggles:

Cool! Who wouldn't want one of those sitting in their driveway?

Most interesting concept and I'm going to have to check the videos out on that. Will be looking forward to seeing how this all turns out for you Tom.

Finally tried my hand on hydrodipping using a junk truck cab. Base coat is silver. I sprayed gloss black and gloss red in hot water; then "slowly" dipped the truck cab in hot water . You start dipping in an angle and work slow to get the whole cab in. Then youre suppose to move the paint away after it's completely submerged before taking it out of the water.

Not my best work but I do need to practice more. Here's are the results of my first hydrodipping method.

This is exactly what I was trying to achieve. Pretty cool, eh?

That's wild and screams Mad Max! Not bad for a first try. The makey dipping specific 'paper' that you float on the water, then hit it with activator and it turns to liquid. The demo you shared the paint method seemed to gloop a bit and add texture.
Thanks,
John
