A desert Sherman in the making

Post by AgentG »

Ok work has been a real bi...er bear, but I have gotten some build time in. Typical DML fare just have to plan ahead because of the fender skirts.

Here are some quickie photos.

I used Vallejo Model Color 916 Sand Yellow for the base coat. I added a drop of Dark Sand and a dab of white as well. It airbrushed just fine thinned with MM Acrylic Thinner and a drop of Vallejo retarder. The green is Lifecolor Olive Green and the border is Vallejo Off White.

Next time I will AB Vallejo using a larger .5mm tip. It sprays well but needs to be slightly thicker than Tamiya or MM Acryl.

Nice! I like Sherman tanks.

Thank you all!

I took some MM Acryl British Gulf War Light Stone, thinned it way out and used that to filter certain areas.
MM Acryl is just a slightly darker, richer tone that makes a great filter for panel contrast. It doesn't show at all in photos so I'll update in a bit.

My work schedule for the year changes this coming Wednesday, so I should have a lot more time on my hands. MrsG is happy!

Owl, at the time of the El Alamein battles SCC 61 "Light Stone" was the called for base color for armored vehicles. It is a sandy yellow color which I read faded to a pale beige over time. The green was an attempt to hide the vehicle from a distance. My understanding is that there is a permanent haze/heat distortion in the desert there and anything less that three feet in height is essentially invisible. I'm thinking the green is an attempt to use that haze as an advantage. While not hiding the tank it can confuse an enemy observer as to distance, direction and type of vehicle approaching. That's what camo is for anyway.

Markings are on and the weathering has begun. I'm trying to replicate the wear patterns of the crew in and around the tank.
