Bruce, I beg your pardon. Made some (not much) progress the past weeks but didn't manage to take photos and post something.
Will attend the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria this weekend so it will take another week until something shows up in here.

Your choice of light grey was made how? To allow the shading to blend through?

I opted for a mid grey that allowes a reasonable contrast to black and white. Also the Tamiya rattle can primers are quite hot stuff that bites into the styrene. I like my basecoats tough.

I would imagine that in reality, it was most likely dust covering the paint, rather than a very thin paint... but you never know.

Yup, got me a filter for that task. AK Three Tone Camo Filter to be exact. Oil paint weathering will follow up.
