That is interesting to know. Love the "bulls eye" on the top of the turret....

Interesting spot to put it.

The first place was on the engine deck.
After El Alamein the Germans were on the run and that deck area became the place for stowage as the war became more mobile.
Next best place was atop the turret.

That's true but with far more Allied aircraft in the air looking for targets, I guess they felt the risk was worth it.

Well above all, you have to be able to identify friend from foe from the air. The RAF roundel as an air ID mark is no more conspicuous than a red white and black nazi flag tied down on the turret top or engine deck as was also commonly seen. And from Alamein onwards the Allies certainly had air superiority in the Western Desert theater of Egypt and Libya. It was not until the Axis retreated into Tunisia was some semblance of balance in the air and on the ground restored.

I used various colors of oil to filter specific areas and replicate accumulated dirt and grime.

Thomas that's done using a small piece of sponge held in forceps. I used acrylic paint so subsequent weathering won't erase the effect.
