Wow! I haven't touched this for a year...

Seeing as how all my old photo's have gone - here's a recap on what kit I'm building.

Image

And this is where I was with it - a completed hull complete with sticky-back Zimmerit and PE grills, and a turret that I was just about to start adding the Zimm to. I've also assembled all the road wheels and barrel for the 88.

Image

Over the last few months I've been sorting out what tracks to go with, as I didn't like the thought of the kit's indy link tracks. So I have a nice set of metal Fruil tracks, and some plastic ones from an old RFM kit that you need to assemble, but look pretty good.

Image

And if you remember, which I doubt you will - I was going to go for this scheme, just to be different.

Image

And that's pretty much where I am - over the last few nights I've been adding the Zimmerit to the turret, but I've found that whilst this sticky-back stuff from Tamiya works well on the large flat surfaces, it's not very good on the small parts - its too stiff and one conform to the curves on the hatches etc, and in some cases it's the wrong shape. So I think I'm going to use putty on those parts - I have Milliputt, and I might get a Zimmerit tool (or I could just make one).

Image

Cheers!

Oh and a couple of videos to watch...

These Squire guys crack me up - I've been following them for years.

Edit:

Okayyyy - why's the YT link not working then...? I did what I normally do of coping the YT share link: https://youtu.be/0s29xmuMCF8?si=h7ENk4830luHaG3l and removing the first portion?

Before you get too deep into this one Stuart, the Kursk scheme would not be accurate for this kit, as it is the late production Tiger with steel rimmed road wheels and cast cupola. The Tigers at Kursk had the drum cupola and rubber rim tire road wheels. But schw.Pnz.Abt. 505 did use late Tigers in 1944. which wore a similar scheme. It should also have zimmerit.

Okay - so this is the scheme I was going for - one of the decal options in the box.

Image

The Cupola on that box art matches the one I've fitted (I just followed the destructions so I'm hoping it's right) and I think these are steel rimmed wheels?

Image

I do have Zimmerit applied as well.

Does that sound right? :hmm:

Yes that sounds right. The profile photo you posted, this one, is of an early model Tiger

The scheme is nearly identical aside from the style of markings. Everything you’re doing or mentioning is correct.

Cool! That's good to know! I just thought it would look a bit different to the three scheme camo's you often see Tigers painted in.

I've finished the Zimmerit. I gave up on the sticky back stuff around the mantle and did it instead with putty. not my best work, but I learnt enough to improve on. I actually prefer the look of to the sticky stuff, so if I ever do another bit of German armour, I'll do it by this method.

Anyway, the Tiger has also had it's first coat of paint. Another coat to go and then I'll try the red.

Stuart's a cat guy. Who'd thought?

Always great to see how the first layer of paint transforms the model!

I love cats!

Thanks Mostrich, it's always good to see all the differing plastic and PE etc. get pulled together.
