Floki's Shipyard 1/50 Drakkar

Post by Floki »

Looking back it's been just a bit over a year since I had a ship in the dry dock with the Going Merry. Now I will be diving into something completely new a wooden ship kit. This is Amarti 1/50 Drakkar longship reviews show it's a good starter kit for those with no experience with wooden kits or modeling in general so hopefully I will be able to do something with it. Also I think you guys know me well enough by now that of course I would build a longship. I will also be using my resin 3D printer to make some extras for this. For starters something different for the bow not every Longship had a dragon head carved. Unless you was a very wealthy Jarl or king most of your fleet would more than likely have a simple curve and going into battle a animal skull such as a ram, deer or elk attached to it.
Starting with the kit, I will never complain about Dragon instructions again these are something special I don't know if it's just a wooden kit thing in general or this kit. Second wood glue compared to something like Tamiya extra thin, I like the extended work time but it's a lot slower build as you can only do little by little.
Getting to this ship now first thing I did, this is a older boxing of the kit and the newer ones come with a different stern spiral you can cut off and attach. Here is what the spiral looks like on the blue print.

So I spent about a hour carving out the spiral to something better.

I also got the false deck that you lay the planking down onto completely glued down and it's drying.

Next up will be planking the hull I'm going to say that will take at least a week since I want to make sure each strip is fully dry and in place before moving onto the next.
If anyone has any experience with wooden kits and can offer some advice I would appreciate that very much.
Thanks for looking in

This will indeed be fun to watch. With balsa kits, CA is quite useful. May be of some use here...

Interesting! I've never seen a WIP for a wooden model before.

It may not be my last wooden ship WIP I also have two tug boat kits that was also my Grandpas.

Got the first hull plank in place it's one of 20 (10 per side) my guess is I could possibly get two done a day one in place when I get home from work then another when I wake up before work.
