1980 Kenny Roberts

Post by keavdog »

All right - ready for some MotoGP history. The man that changed MotoGP forever bringing American dirt track style to European MotoGP racing... Mr Kenny Roberts. The young American that brought the knee down, sliding around corners to the race winning the championship in 1978, 1979 and 1980 pushing that Yamaha around the track and giving us what we see today in MotoGP - here is the 1980 winning build!

Starting with the frame. This is an old Tamiya kit and it shows. The new kits have zero mould separation lines... this has many. Still fun to build

Got a bit of the motor together, more to come

Very cool! I've never seen a build of these bikes.

Somebody said Kenny?

Ha. Big southpark fan. Looking forward to the new season in 2 days!

Progress. The new kits are so much better, engineering, fit etc. This one takes a bit of patience.

Nice!
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

I know Tamiya has rider kits to add to the bikes. Any plans of getting one?

Yes, after such a long time finally a bike build again!
I love the look of the 80's machines and that livery of your kit. Was a tobacco sponsor on it back then?

Not on this bike. Goodyear was the major sponser. I do recall Malboro being a sponser in motogp and f1

I’ve been wanting to find those old vintage motocross kits on eBay. I remember seeing the old Revell Husqvarna motocross kit and the Suzuki motocross kit back in the 70s. Those were the only two vintage motocross kits made back then.
