If only they were easier to get over here...
Revell Germany has released many older Monogram kits over the years in their catalogs. Certainly many of their 1/48 kits have a Monogram lineage.
Yeah I'll have to take a look, although like you I prefer the original boxings. You can get them over here, Revell boxing's or otherwise, the kicker is the expense. A Monogram P-47 in a mono or Revell boxing can actually be more expensive than the Tamiya kit.

Okay, so now that my Kitsworld 3d printed instrument panel decal thingy has turned up - I've been able to progress.

These are the finished cockpit parts - not my best work, but in my defence I took this at quite a close macro and it all looks better from a normal viewing distance - that's my excuse anyway

And this is the IP in question - I had to trim it down a lot to fit the cockpit, I suspect the Monogram IP is slightly under-width. But it looks okay. I'm not massively impressed with the product (it took me three attempts to stick it down) and in future I'll probably stick to PE or decals, but it looks much much better than the kit one did. The problem I had with the Monogram IP was the lack of raised detail on the face - it just didn't drybrush very well and it was hard to make out for detail painting. I guess it could have possibly been a moulding fault - the tools were getting on for 20 years old when this kit was made.

And this is the pilot I painted up over the weekend. He was actually a lot of fun to paint - It's just simple base colours over a black base and then a brown citadel wash over that. I really do need to improve my figure painting skills - I've purchased some 1/35 figures

That's all for now, hopefully I can get the fuselage together later.

Cheers!

Your pilot looks great Stuart. Yea the kit IP is a tad small, a victim of the one part cockpit tub design...

Pit looks good. And the pilot turned out very nice - figures add so much. I'd rather have a nice pilot than a nice ejection seat.
Thanks,
John

Stuart! That is some excellent paint work in the cockpit! :wow: :shoutout: Man I can’t believe that is the Monogram pilot figure. Wow! The 3-D decal for the IP really helps out in there too! And that is a great touch to connect the oxygen hose from the cockpit tub to the pilot.

I think when I built my last one, I left the head armor off until the end, which allows you to install the canopy rail at the end as well.. There may have been some minor surgery needed to make sure there was enough clearance to get it in there. I also sanded the slot (fuselage parts) where the canopy rail slides to make it a bit wider as it can be quite a tight fit, especially after paint is applied.

Ah noted - I have gone out of sequence with this - woops. Mind you, I am intended to close up the canopy before paint so it might not be an issue.

Thanks Tom - It's really very easy, just a wash over the base colours of Humbrol Brown and Flesh and Leather.
