Tiger Tiger burning Bright... (Tamiya 1/35 Tiger I (Late)

Okay so I've ballsed this one up.

I've got a bit confused around the scheme - I've mixed up the Dunkelgelb and brown scheme, with the austerity scheme of 1945 where they painted the dark yellow in strips directly over the red primer - apparently by 1945 they didn't have Zimmerit...

I suppose I could re-paint it - but it does look cool!



This the scheme I was going for...



I've also started building up a set of RFM tracks for it.

Who said that they were painted. It's all speculative. Paint it the way you want.

That sure does look cool, Stuart! I agree with Mike, I'd leave it and be glad. Are you having to add the track horns to those tracks as well? Wow, that is wild; it would take me several sessions to get that accomplished!

Yeah I'm just tempted to leave it as it is and just call it a 'what-if'. I really do like that red, and my daughter thinks it looks cool so that's good enough for me lol! There's still a fair bit to do to it anyway, so it shouldn't look so stark when done.

That particular Tiger is fairly well documented in photos.



It was a late production type, as indicated by the road wheel and cupola types, and built with factory applied zimmerit. Tigers had been replaced with King Tigers on the production line by the time that zimmerit was discontinued in late summer 1944. It also would have had a factory applied coat of Dunkelgelb, and the crews applying the secondary Olivgrun and Rotbraun colors as directed by the unit, in this case schwere Panzer Abteilung 505, depending upon local conditions.

Thanks for that Carlos, that's the first photo I've seen. Ahhhh man I'm torn. I DO like the red primer, buuuuut - it's not right is it. and I DO have the correct brown. I'm assuming the undersides and behind the running gear would have been dunkelgelb?

Well, you do have some wiggle room on the brown. It was issued to the units as a paste. When they applied it, it was thinned with whatever was on hand, and then sprayed or brushed on, so there was no 100% correct shade, but variations of the color. But yes, the area of the lower hull behind the road wheels should be in the Dunkelgelb shade at the factory. Once in service that area will get scraped by the tracks occasionally, and be covered in mud and dust.

To be honest I'm thinking of stripping it and starting again. I've actually ordered some Tamiya paints to do the standard (if anything about painting Tigers was standard) three colour camouflage more typical to the Western Front.

Well I'm not 100% correct on the paint I'm sure - but I've had another stab at it. Looks a lot better now. The red primer has been completely over-painted with either the Dunkelgelb or brown and I'm onto the detail painting now.



I'm a lot happier with that.
