Yup… I feel your pain with these vintage Monogram kits. Dealt with enough of it on my Monogram P-38 Lightning I had just finished…. well 95% of it anyways. :bag: :giggles:

The kit burner cans are less than great. Additionally, they are only an inch deep, if that.. Hey, I have this 3d printer thing now... How hard can it be to make a new burner can? Just measure a few thing, draw a profile and do a revolve...

Now, how about an intake trunk? Yea, ok , maybe not...

Nice work! I've tried building this kit several times and it never works out.

You have to be the Rocky Balboa of Model Builders to tackle this kit, because the kit is going to be like this guy.... :giggles:

Carlos,
I usually use a 1/2 inch long piece of 3/32 brass rod and reinforce the attachment with some styrene block glued inside the fuselage, drilled out to accept the brass rod. Hardest part is getting the angle right and consistent on both stabs. Also have to be very careful to drill the hole in the stabs as they are barely thick enough to accept a 3/32 rod… now I am saying 3/32 from memory… 1/8 seems like it would be to large but I could be wrong…
I confirmed, it's 3/32 " brass rod for the elevators...
Yep, that's pretty much what I did with both my 1/48 Tornados.

Awesome to see this build going on Chris - loving all the mods you're doing to it to help get it together and a really nice job of those 3D printed exhausts. I really do like the Tomcat, I must crack on with my Tamiya kit someday.

Thanks Stuart. I keep debating getting the Tamiya F-14 (1/48). I am afraid if build one I won't be able to build any more of my Monogram Tomcat's :giggles: And I have about 10 schemes I want to build and can't afford 10 Tamiya Tomcats

I think you're going well enough on this not to worry about it. Tbh. I've only got the F-14 and P-38 because they were Christmas presents. Trouble is I'm too much of a wuss to build them - far to many parts LOL! Mind you, I'm beginning to feel the draw to 1/48th so they might get built soon.

Doubt it'll look as good as this though - a cracking bit of work.
