Tamiya 1/48 P-51D Mustang

Post by BlackSheep214 »

With the Eduard Mustang kit gone to $..t, I'm doing this one to resume as part of my Dual build with the F-16 Viper kit.

The kit.

I'll probably cannibalize some of the parts from the Eduard kit and use it on this one... IF they fit with no issues. We'll see. :hmm:

That is a super great kit! I don't know the Eduard or Hasegawa P-51's but that one is a jewel.

This is the cockpit from the Eduard Mustang kit

Image

This is the Tamiya cockpit part.

What I'm cannabalizing. (Obviously the Eduard cockpit floor will not be used.) I will remove the top two small boxes (very carefully) that sit behind the seat and replace them with the Eduard parts shown below

Image

I will try to reuse these tiny hoses/attachment parts and add them to the Tamiya cockpit. If they break, thats okay since I won't see it once the fuselage is buttoned up.

Tom, AMAZING IDEA!!! I’m sure you thought of this but have you verified the interior height from batteries to canopy??

Image

I had to really adjust that height the most when I scratch built the Hasegawa P-51D cockpit in 1/32.

Test fit and sand down if need be. Yup... way ahead of you. Same with the seat. :giggles: :giggles: :giggles:

Tom, What happened with the Eduard version? I seem to be missing that part of the story here.

Fit issues with the wheel well section to bottom wing and top wings wouldn't sit properly. Tried sanding as much as I could then I got frustrated. Took a hammer to it. It was the Profipak kit version.

Wow Tom, I just saw your Eduard P-51 thread. That really is too bad. I have to think that you must have installed something incorrectly to have gotten a gap like that. I have two Eduard P-51D-5's in the stash. I will have to be super careful and test fit everything it look like. Hopefully you will have a better experience with the Tamiya kit, even if it's rather simple by comparison. I do wish Tamiya would modernize their 1/48 P-51's. Their A6M's have had a 1st and 2nd generation. Surely a subject as popular as the P-51 deserves a 2nd go around :hmm:
