Tamiya De Havilland Mosquito B.Mk VI USAAF "The Spook"

Post by dmminiatures »

Hi Guys - Here was another build that I did in between working on the T-34 vignette. The vignette was long and hard, and in between I felt like way down in the dumps. I needed a muse, so this kit came just at the right time.

A bit of history with this stash. I bought this Tamiya 1/72 scale De Havilland Mosquito B.MkVI almost 10 years ago. I never had the change to build it. I was thinking of selling it off until our club had a WW2 group build. Meanwhile, I needed something simple and quick to compensate the slow and difficult Vignette project, so I chose this kit. Complicating things were the yellowing decals. So I bought the Xtradecal sheet. And while waiting for the sheet, I went ahead with constructing it.

The Spook was a Canadian-built B.Mk VI and converted to PR work. It served the USAAF briefly, particularly in the Mediterranean Theatre. It retained the RAF camo work. All the USAAF Mossies where returned to the UK but the fate of The Spook was unknown, some say it crashed landed in North Africa, but some other say it survived the war and was returned.

Apologies if in some of the photos, you can still see some dirt particles, due to my sensor being dirty. There is even a small red spider (second photo) that hopped and walk across the wing area and I wasn't paying attention when I was taking the photo. I later had to Photo-Shopped the spider to make it disappear.

Looking so cool, especially a British airplane in US markings!
The opposite combination is also cool!

Well done, I like the weathering a lot!

Great painting, it looks distressed (in a good way) , very realistic. And especially for such a small scale!

Interesting and a very nice build. Never knew the Mossie was in US service. Perhaps a Lend - Lease deal?

Beautiful work! Very hard to believe that is a 1/72 build. The quilt tu available in that scale has come a LONG way. Really a super job on all aspects of this build.

Thank you for the kinds words, Borg, Jeeves, Blacksheep, Stikpusher.

yes, Blacksheep, it was called a "reversed lend-lease" deal. I think the USAAF bought around 100 Mossies and returned what's left of them back to the UK after the war. I think Mossies other than the RAF gray and green camo are the most interesting subjects for modeling: PR blue, night-fighter, RAAF Mossies. RAF oversees operations, and other countries are some of the best examples I could think of for a modeling topic.
