Into the 3D Printing Rabbit Hole

Post by Stikpusher »

Well, with some substantial help from my son, aka tech support, we were able to get my 3D printer working this evening…

And after nearly 90 minutes of printing, then another 10 minutes or so of wash and UV light curing, we created this test print semi successfully…

Image

I say semi successful, or as my son termed it, a successful failure, due to it ending up a bit too brittle, and this ended up cracking and breaking. So successful print, but an overdone finishing process. Lessons learned. ;)

That's going to be a great tool for you, Carlos, once you get the hang of it. :shoutout: Most excellent! Imagine the possibilities. My son's kids got one from their maternal grandparents and it was pretty neat. Carson had already printed a weird sphere/egg-shaped puzzle made of interlocking "petals"...it looked like a Rubic's Cube for Darth Vader!

Is the smell that bad of resin as you mentioned the previous owner claims.

It’s quite potent of a smell, and will give you a headache or make you light headed without some sort of mask. But I am definitely not allergic or sensitive to it like he is. I’ve already had some make contact with my bare skin with no reactions there. I got a bit excited once my son got the problems figured out and forgot to put on the gloves… :giggles:

Looks like you need to tweak you exposure times a bit Caros. But you are off to a good start for sure.

I gave up on my Resin 3D printing ambitions until I can get a proper work space for it. With kids in the house and no dedicated / safe place to deal with the resin, it was a non starter for safety reasons. For now I am content with my filament printer. Be careful and always user PPE. You do not want to breath those fumes or get it on your skin. You can appear to have not adverse affects after exposure , but as time goes on you will.. Good luck and be safe.

Yes, to echo Chris about latent effects from contact with printing compounds, but this is what happened to my friend who switched from resin casting in itself dangerous to 3D printing. He was going along like gangbusters then went into the hospital, I’ve shown you the shop filtration system he had to buy in order to keep going. Not to be a doomsayer. Just a concerned citizen of our fair hobby.

Thanks for the heads up on the hazards. I do wash my hands immediately afterwards for 30+ seconds with soap and hot water after any exposure/skin contact… have my respirator mask and heavy duty gloves. I felt like I was in MOPP gear using all that with the printer last night…

For those of you who don’t know what MOPP gear is, it’s this crap
