2026 12 Hour GB project

Post by Stikpusher »

Yup, it’s that time of year again… the annual So.Cal.AMPS 12 Hour Build Challenge- build a kit from start to finish within 12 hours in three separate monthly Zoom meeting four hour sessions. Session 1 was today, session 2 will be in May, and session 3 in June. The kit selected for me by fellow club members from the three submitted is this one, a Tamiya 1/35 Sdkfz. 251/9

Being Tamiya, the build has gone super smooth compared to ones I have built in previous 12 hour challenge GBs and I got much farther along than I had planned for or anticipated. I completed probably 90% of the construction, aside from getting the top and bottom of the hull together, along with a few small detail parts on the hull. I also was able to airbrush on a base coat of AK Real Colors Dark Yellow RAL 7028.

Stand by for the next update in late May ;)

Thanks John. Gotta love a Tamiya kit. Hard to believe that I was able to accomplish that much in four hours. I’m with you on this variant of the 251. Same main gun as used on the early Sturmgeschutz III’s and Panzer IV’s. The 251 family is certainly the best looking half track fielded by any army in WWII.

Nice project Carlos!

It's a fun challenge. I recently did a GB where the aim is to build in a 24 hour period. I built a Matchbox Hawk - started at 7pm on a Wednesday and finished by 5pm on the Thursday (and that's fitting it around daily life). It's an interesting thing to do - you find out quite a lot about how you can push the materials you work with etc. I used some spray gloss and was putting decals on it 1/2 an hour later.

Great work, Carlos!
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Stuart, you are so on target about materials with a speed build. Acrylics and lacquers for the paints with their rapid drying are a must!

Tom, these Sdkfz 251 half tracks just look mean I think. All those flat angled armor plates for protection give a more menacing appearance. Not as boxy as other countries’ half tracks… plus those overlapping road wheels… I’m sure they suck to work on in real life for maintenance, but they look good
